New volunteer opportunities – plus a special event!

Collect petition signatures for MPs to support Motion M-86

In the next few months, MPs will be voting on Motion M-86 for a National Citizens’ Assembly on Electoral Reform. We have launched a petition campaign aimed at convincing undecided MPs to vote yes.

Building grassroots power is crucial to winning this vote!

We have identified three target ridings in Toronto and will be canvassing them together as a group in January:

  • Parkdale – High Park – Sunday, January 7
  • Eglinton Lawrence – Saturday, January 13
  • Don Valley West – Saturday, January 20

No matter which riding you live in, we hope you’ll be able to join one of our group canvassing days!

Electoral Reform Campaign Mobilization Training

We are thrilled to offer Campaign Training for all supporters who want to help with Fair Vote Canada’s petition campaign in the Greater Toronto Area.

When: Saturday December 9, 2023, 10 AM – 3 PM

Where: 2237 Dundas Street West (Dundas West and Bloor West)

At this training, you’ll learn how to talk to people to collect petition signers, develop a ground game to win, and build a strong team. The last hour of the day we will hit the streets to put what we’ve learned into practice.

Our trainer is Katie Perfitt, who is an organizer and campaigner who has been a part of dozens of climate and social justice campaigns. She led distributed, base-building organizing across Atlantic Canada that pushed dozens of municipalities to recognize the Right to a Healthy Environment. She spent 7 years with the 350.org Canada team to build people-power to confront the power of the fossil fuel industry and to build public support to tackle the climate crisis. She has trained hundreds of organizers through Olivia Chow’s Institute for Change Leaders. She now works for the David Suzuki Foundation’s Climate Team.

Lunch will be provided. We will cover the cost of parking if you need to drive, but because of traffic conditions in the city, we highly recommend that you park at a TTC or GO station outside the city centre and take the train the rest of the way. If you decide to drive straight to the venue, there is a large Loblaws parking lot across the street.

If you would like to learn practical skills to help us win Motion M-86 for a National Citizens’ Assembly on Electoral Reform and continue building support and momentum for proportional representation in Canada, this training is for you!

This is also a great opportunity to meet some of your fellow volunteers in Toronto. We hope you’ll join us on Saturday!

Calling All Teachers and Education Workers:

Fair Vote Canada is looking for volunteers with teaching or classroom experience to help create age-appropriate teaching information about electoral systems and citizens’ assemblies for grades K-4 and 5 to 8!

Interested volunteers will work alongside curriculum writers from the Elementary Teachers of Toronto (ETT) to develop this classroom resource package using popular education strategies to fit the information into different subjects such as reading, math, civics, history, and art. For example, in math classes, probabilities, percentages and decimals could be brought in when talking about our electoral process.

Please send an email to to*****@fa******.ca if you are interested in joining this exciting new project!

Can you help with our outreach initiatives?

At FVT, a key aspect of our mission is to raise awareness about Proportional Representation and electoral reform. This is achieved through establishing connections with diverse groups, communities, and organizations.

The initial phase of our outreach involves identifying opportunities for presentations. It could be that your organization is keen on learning more about electoral reform, or you might be aware of an upcoming conference where our presentation would be fitting. Having someone facilitate these connections is crucial to our outreach efforts.

Following the initial meeting or presentation, we maintain ongoing communication and work towards cultivating relationships that may evolve into collaborations on special projects.

If contributing to this effort aligns with your interests, kindly inform us by sending an email to to*****@fa******.ca !
