Our unfair voting system means Canadians do not get the policy they vote for, so their values are not expressed in the legislation that is passed and implemented using their taxpayers’ dollar. It is no wonder that hundreds of advocacy groups exist to protest against legislation that falsely claims to represent the majority; they exist in environment, health care, anti-poverty, education, housing, tenants’ rights…the list goes on and on. Fair Vote invites every advocacy group based in Toronto and their supporters to include fair voting in their mandates and support candidates that support proportional representation. A united, multi-faceted and multi-partisan voice makes a more powerful impact than a single voice that can be misinterpreted as representing a single issue.
Our voting system is the one major roadblock to progress that we are all faced with. As long as our voting system remains unchanged, we will always be vulnerable to disastrous about-faces that have us scrambling trying to hang on to hard-won gains as opposed to building a better Canada step-by-step, day-by-day.
Fair Vote Toronto, as a team of Fair Vote Canada, is committed to standing up for democracy and demanding that federal and provincial parties commit to changing to proportional representation if they are elected. Your advocacy group can help us accomplish this!
