All I Want for X-Mas is Proportional Representation ⛄

fair vote canada tis the season for a national citizens assembly on electoral reform

The winter holidays are here and with them comes the opportunity of a new year to advocate for electoral reform! As we celebrate the festivities with our loved ones, it’s worth taking the time to reflect on what the movement for Proportional Representation achieved this past year.

With a growing team of volunteers leading the charge on improving Canada’s democracy, Fair Vote Canada went full swing into webinars, door hangers, flyers and face masks over the last 12 months.

We fought to elect PR champions in September’s federal election, celebrated the PROC committee passing a motion to study a National Citizens’ Assembly on Electoral Reform (albeit in the previous parliament), and elected a slew of new members to Fair Vote Canada’s board of directors.

We also pushed back on the notion that ranked ballots (aka the Alternative Vote) are a suitable replacement to First Past the Post in Ontario, and will continue doing so in 2022.

Throughout all of this, our community’s support and commitment to the cause has been integral to keeping us in the fight for PR. Thank you to each and every one of you – we hope you’ll continue reading our Toronto newsletters and supporting Fair Vote Canada in 2022!

Electoral Reform in the News

Proportional Representation continues to make the news as more Canadians wake up to the sorry state of our democracy. Here is a sample of what is being said:

Ranked Ballots are often touted as a meaningful change from our current First Past the Post system, but would they actually have changed any results?

Fair Vote Canada recently ran several simulations on how all Ontario elections since 1987 would’ve played out in a Ranked Ballot system.

The results are that the winner of each election would have stayed the same with the only exception being the Liberal victory in 2011 would’ve switch from a minority to majority victory, proving that proportional representation is the only system that can produce meaningful change.
