Canada’s Fourth Early Election in 15 years

Our federal election began last week as the Prime Minister called upon the Governor General to dissolve parliament two years ahead of schedule. This makes it our fourth early election in just 15 years, and many Canadians are wondering why we’re going to the polls in the midst of the pandemic’s fourth wave.

With the narrative of parliamentary dysfunction unravelling, it’s becoming increasingly clear that this unnecessary election is actually all about power. Specifically, Justin Trudeau’s quest for another false majority government by exploiting the system he promised to end in 2015.

We say false as his party is only polling around 35% of the vote, which is far short of a true majority government of 51% yet close enough to secure total control under First Past the Post. Until we eliminate the unjust reward of false majorities, ruling parties will always take a gamble on securing more power than they are due.

Whatever the result on September 20th, Canadians must make it known that our country can’t keep using a system that forces us back to the polls every time a party doesn’t win a majority. The political prize we should all be cheering for this election is Proportional Representation.
